Walkerville’s Ace Sets High Standard For the 2015-16 Season
In her first game on Australian soil, import pitcher Chelsea Cohen was perfect for six innings for Walkerville before the Cats eventually won 6-0 against Glenelg in the opening round of South Australian A grade softball, at West Beach on Saturday.
The new Diamond Sports facility at West Beach has proven a big hit for softball and baseball, with Cohen’s performance a significant effort, giving up just one it at the top of the seventh and final inning before retiring the side in order.
Besides retiring 21 of the 22 batters she faced, Cohen struck out 16 hitters, in a performance that will have the rest of the competition looking over their shoulders.
Walkerville score a run in the second frame, after Steph Collett doubled and came home on Erin Reed’s hit to first base, while a four run sixth – fuelled by two errors and hits to Collett and Karyn Dale – sealed the result.
Behind a 13-run second inning, West Torrens ran out easy victors over Port Adelaide, 16-0, with Emma Burridge and Carly Moore collecting three hits from three visits to the plate.
In a relative surprise result, Seacombe beat reigning premier Sturt 12-5, with a nine-run third frame proving the difference.
Trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the third, Seacombe benefited from Georgia Hood’s three-run triple and Amber Hood’s two-run single.
Georgia Hood was also the winning pitcher, giving up five hits and two walks for seven strikeouts in five innings of work.
