The big clash between the top two A grade softball sides, Walkerville and Sturt was expected to be a battle royal between the Cats star pitcher Chelsea Cohen and the Falcons Monica Perry, which while the headline act wasn’t the same, the result was, with extra innings required.
Cohen was rested to play first base, with Sally Colquist taking to the circle against Perry, with the game scoreless through the regulation seven frames.
In the top of the eighth inning, Sarah Tonkin started on second base for Sturt, Lily Rasheed laid down a sacrifice bunt, with Maddie Cameron belting a RBI triple, and then scoring on pinch-hitter Belinda White’s bunt, for a 2-0 lead.
The Cats were not up to the challenge and, like all game, could not muster a hit against Perry in the bottom of the eighth, to lose 2-0.
Perry walked the first batter of the game and then only surrendered two base-runners, in the fourth and seventh frames on errors, and finished with 11 strikeouts.
For her part, Colquist only gave up six hits and no walks for three K2s.
A three-run fifth inning, with Jenny Dunn, Georgie Hood and Natasha Strapps collecting hits, paved the way for Seacombe’s surprise 4-3 victory over West Torrens.
Georgie Hood pitched well to lead the Tigers, while also picking up two hits, to go with her sister Amber Hood’s three.
With consistent batting, Glenelg remained in the hunt for a top fourth berth with a surprise 8-3 victory over Port Adelaide – in spite of Magpie pitcher Courtney Auger picking up 13 strikeouts. Kushla Brewster did the job from the circle for the victors.
Mid-week games will be interesting, with Sturt and West Torrens playing on Tuesday, and Walkerville and Port Adelaide, as well as Glenelg and Seacombe playing on Wednesday. All games at Diamond Sports, West Beach, at 7.30pm.
